Advertisements
While these advertisements were published in student-created literary magazines, they come from outside sources. Sources who knew that Bryn Mawr students were the ones who would see the ads. Therefore they reflect the beliefs and expectations these companies had about what products they could successfully market to women and how to appeal to this target audience.
The clothing ads imply that a college woman needed to be well-dressed in order to enhance her intelligence at school. Being educated is not enough- she must be visually appealing and charming to be successful.
The Jell-O ads demonstrate the assumption that women would marry and do all of the cooking in their household for their husband.
