The 1902 Alphabet

The 1902 Alphabet part 1.jpg

This amusing piece of poetry and art from the 1902 Yearbook gives us insight into the personalities and values of the students from the class of 1902. The alphabet includes praise for several individuals, from Jeanie the basketball player to Miss Wood the tea hostess- these examples show us some activities the women of this class were engaged in. The fact that both sports and tea parties were relevant enough on campus to praise in the class yearbook tells us that these Bryn Mawr women had a variety of pasttimes that were considered worthwhile and appropriate for them.

Perhaps most interesting are the letters that include comparisons between Bryn Mawr students and men. For example:

"R is for rolicking A.S. Rotan, Who argues a case quite as well as a man."

or: "E's for Elise, she delcares she hates men- yet she's seen with C Cibber again and again."
